Funding Priorities

Te Pou Māori funds organisations that fit with the following four priorities, and where Māori constitute at least 80 percent of the organisations governance.

Tino Rangatiratanga

Tino Rangatiratanga: Māori self-determination, sovereignty, and autonomy. In practice:

Māori succeeding as Māori / Successful Māori Models / Māori-led initiatives

  • Successful Māori-led models and initiatives lead to transformational change at all levels by supporting political, cultural, and institutional change.

  • Supporting new and known Indigenous solutions enables Maōri-led kaikōkiri address issues of social justice, inequity, and exclusion.

Intergenerational Leadership

Succession / Development of leadership skills, knowledge, and models

  • Supporting kaikōkiri Māori to build leadership skills and knowledge, develop leadership models, and ensure succession so that decisions are mokopuna focused.

Innovative Ventures and Solutions

Entrepreneurship / Data Sovereignty

  • Supporting Māori innovation, voice, and leadership enables hapori to trial ideas with potential to enhance wellbeing and mana through entrepreneurial initiatives.

  • Māori data sovereignty ensures Māori keep control and ownership of their intellectual property.

Collective and Collaborative Action

National and International Action / Influence systems change / Building strategic relationships

  • Connecting with relevant funding networks and building coalitions/partnerships enables Māori systemic thinking and action both nationally and internationally.

  • Supporting collective funding events to influence best practice funding removes barriers to equitable financial support.


Te Kāhui Rangatahi

Supporting opportunities for rangatahi to strengthen their skills and knowledge as leaders in their communities.

It supports rangatahi-led initiatives that advance equity by focusing on:

  • Te Tuakiritanga o Te Tangata (Culture, Language and Identity)
    When an indigenous young person’s culture features strongly, indigenous youth will thrive.

  • Leadership
    Supporting rangatahi to build upon their skills to enable leadership succession.

  • Rangatahi-led innovation
    Indigenous knowledge is recognised worldwide as a means to find solutions to complex problems, to enhance understanding of our environment, and provide a basis for strengthening cultural identity.
