October 2021: New Kaikōkiri Announced

The J R McKenzie Trust is pleased to announce its most recent funding recipients as follows:

Te Hā o Mātauranga (The Kaikōura Education Trust)

$150K over three years

Te Hā o Mātauranga’s Education Change Programme builds on The Kaikōura Education Trust‘s previous success in connecting their community with local schools and training community members to support young people who have been expelled or who are not attending school. Funding is provided for the creation of a coordinator position.

Young Workers Resource Centre

$136K over three years

The Young Workers Resource Centre (YWRC) is a community organisation dedicated to empowering young workers to challenge systemic inequities in the labour market. Funding is provided to enable the employment of a coordinator who will oversee the implementation and operation of the YWRC helpline service and coordinate the organisation’s advocacy campaigns.

 

Mana Tahuna Charitable Trust

$77K over one year

Mana Tāhuna is a charitable trust based in Tāhuna (Queenstown) and was formed as a post COVID-19 response. Their mission is to improve the overall wellbeing and livelihood of Māori people within the Tāhuna community through activities such as job creation and re-skilling, the cultivation of kotahitanga (unity), provision of health services, and delivery of programmes for rangatahi hauora (youth wellbeing). Funding is provided for operational costs.

 

Shoebox Christmas Trust

$75K over one year

Working alongside low decile schools, preschools, Women's Refuge, and community organisations, Shoebox Christmas Aotearoa provides Christmas gifts to tamariki in low socio-economic situations. Evidence shows that the more positive experiences vulnerable tamariki receive, the more likely they are to experience good mental health and make positive decisions in the future. Funding is provided for the development of resources that enhance the training and mentoring of volunteer rangatahi.

VOYCE - Whakarongo Mai

$90K over one year

VOYCE - Whakarongo Mai are an independent charity organisation that advocates for the approximately 6000 Kiwi children with care experience (children in foster or whanau care). Their mission is to amplify the voices of these children and ensure that they are heard. They run local events and experiences to create safe networks and communities that help connect care-experienced young Kiwis and build positive morale. Funding is provided for operational costs associated with the expansion of their programme.

Harbour Sport Trust

$121K over two years

This programme uses sport as a vehicle for motivating whanau to become engaged in health and wellbeing, employment and education. Funding is for the establishment of a new Pacific Community Trust which is intended to enable greater collective work and provide a structure to support the wider Pasifika community to innovate, develop and deliver sport and recreation initiatives for themselves.

Lote Tree Trust (Amana Trust Board)

$219K over three years

Lote Tree Trust is an Auckland-based charitable trust with a vision of building thriving communities. With a focus on young people and ethnic minorities, they facilitate educational, social, economic and capacity-building projects. Over the last six years, they have created a vibrant community with hundreds of people participating in a range of projects. Funding is provided for the employment of a full-time coordinator who will assist the organisation’s growing volunteer team.
